All plants of the green roof are typical species of the Mediterranean basin. The roof is segmented into nine massifs with two types of vegetation: woody perennials growing tall and so-called low perennials. Each clump is composed of tre different plant species in order to spread flowering throughout the event.
The theme of the Expo is “Feeding the Planet” so it was “de rigueur” to install a vegetable garden on the flat part of the roof, with vegetables suitable for Mediterranean climate, but also a little more exotic like the Hibiscus esculentus, which fruit known as Okra is used to feed peoples of Africa. Around this garden a “field” of grass will be planted to recall the wheat fields.
The roof shape recalls the reliefs of the south east of France, with its mountains down to the sea. On the roof there will be a river, «The blue ribbon», with its source at the highest point of the mountain. It trickles down to the sea at the lowest point and this is symbol of irrigation, essential to cultivate the land.
VEGETAL CONTINENT ISLETS
Expo brings together the Countries of the five continents and they will be represented by the islets of endemic flowers.
